Wyvern Compass

Privacy notice

We publish a free weekly briefing. This notice explains the small amount of personal information that involves, what we do with it, and how you get it back or have it deleted.

Who we are

Wyvern Compass Limited is the data controller for the personal information described in this notice. We are registered in England and Wales under company number 12432842, with our registered office at Suite A, 82 James Carter Road, Mildenhall, IP28 7DE.

For any question about this notice or about your personal information, write to info@wyvern-compass.co.uk.

What we collect, and why

We collect very little. This site has no accounts, no shop, no comments and no forms, and it sets no cookies. There are three ways we may hold information about you.

If you subscribe to The China Explainer

Our weekly briefing is sent through Substack. When you subscribe you give Substack your email address, and optionally a name. We can see that information in our subscriber list, together with basic delivery statistics such as whether an email was opened or a link was clicked. We use it to send you the briefing and nothing else. We do not sell, rent or share subscriber lists.

If you email us

If you write to us at info@wyvern-compass.co.uk or gateway@wyvern-compass.co.uk we hold your email address and the contents of your message so that we can reply and keep a record of the correspondence.

When you visit this website

Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which include the IP address of the visiting device, the pages requested, and the date and time. These are generated automatically by the web server and are used to keep the site running and secure. We do not use analytics, tracking pixels or advertising technology of any kind.

Our lawful basis for using it

Who else handles it

We use a small number of service providers who process personal information on our behalf. Each is bound by its own contractual terms and its own privacy policy.

  • Substack Inc. hosts the briefing, stores the subscriber list and sends the emails.
  • Our web host serves this website and the newsletter archive, and generates the server logs described above.
  • Microsoft provides our email service.

Some of these providers are based outside the United Kingdom, which means your information may be transferred internationally. Where that happens, the transfer relies on the safeguards set out in each provider's own terms, such as the International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

We will also disclose information where we are required to do so by law.

How long we keep it

  • Subscriber details are kept for as long as you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, Substack retains a suppression record so that you are not re-added by mistake.
  • Correspondence is kept for two years from the last message, unless there is a reason to keep it longer.
  • Server logs are kept for the period set by our hosting provider, which is typically no more than 30 days.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected if it is wrong, and to have it erased. You may also ask us to restrict how we use it, object to our using it, or receive it in a portable form. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw that consent at any time.

The fastest way to withdraw consent for the briefing is the unsubscribe link at the foot of every edition. For anything else, email info@wyvern-compass.co.uk. We will respond within one month. There is no charge.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so that we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at any time.
