Accessibility statement

This statement covers wyvern-compass.co.uk. It sets out the measures taken, how far the site conforms to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, and the places where it does not yet.

What we have done

Accessibility was treated as a build requirement rather than a retrofit. Specifically:

• Every colour pair on the site was checked against WCAG contrast ratios before launch. Two colours in our brand palette, the amber and the gold, are never used for text because they cannot meet the ratio at body size.
• The page is built from real headings in order, so it can be navigated by structure rather than by sight.
• All interactive elements are reachable by keyboard and show a visible focus outline. A skip link is the first thing in the tab order.
• The navigation sub-menu opens on keyboard focus as well as on hover, without relying on JavaScript.
• The position indicator in the navigation is announced to assistive technology, so position is not conveyed by colour alone.
• All motion is disabled for anyone whose system requests reduced motion.
• Text uses fonts already installed on your device, so it resizes and reflows with your own settings rather than fighting them.
• The decorative dragon mark is hidden from screen readers rather than announced as a meaningless image.

Conformance status

We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. This site is partially conformant, which means it meets most of the standard but not all of it. The gaps are listed below rather than glossed over.

Known limitations

We would rather tell you where the site falls short than let you discover it.

• No menu on small screens. Below roughly 900 pixels wide, the navigation links are hidden and there is currently no replacement menu. Every section remains reachable by scrolling, and the footer links to each one, but the quick navigation is not available. This is the most significant gap and we intend to fix it.
• Small text in places. Source citations, dates and fine print are set small. They meet contrast requirements at that size, but they will be harder to read for some people. Browser zoom works normally throughout.
• Chinese terms. Chinese characters appear alongside English in several places. Where the character is decorative it is marked as such; where it carries meaning it is glossed in English. Pronunciation by a screen reader will depend on the voices installed on your device.
• Linked material. We link to government departments, statistical agencies and other publishers. We cannot control the accessibility of those sites.

Technical information

Accessibility of this site relies on HTML and CSS. JavaScript is used only for the reading-position indicator and the reveal animation; with JavaScript disabled, all content remains visible and every link works. The site loads no external resources.

How we assessed it

This statement is based on a self-assessment carried out in September 2026, using automated contrast checking across every colour pair on the page, keyboard-only navigation testing, and rendering checks at desktop and mobile widths. It has not been audited by an external accessibility specialist. We will say so here when it has.

Legal position

Wyvern Compass Limited is a private company, so the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 do not apply to us. Our duties arise under the Equality Act 2010, which requires reasonable adjustments so that disabled people are not placed at a substantial disadvantage. We publish this statement because we think it is the right thing to do, not because we are required to.
