Wyvern Compass

Cookies

A short page, because there is little to report. This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from anywhere else.

This website does not use cookies

No cookies are set by wyvern-compass.co.uk. The site also stores nothing in your browser's local storage or session storage, runs no analytics, loads no third-party fonts, embeds no video, uses no content delivery network and carries no advertising or tracking pixels.

That is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly, so here is how to check it rather than take our word for it. Open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab and reload this page. Every request should be to this domain. Then look under Application or Storage: the cookie list for this site should be empty.

Why we built it this way

Two reasons. The first is that we do not need the data. We publish a newsletter and we do not sell advertising, so there is nothing here that a tracking script would tell us which is worth the intrusion.

The second is practical. Many of the services a website would normally load from elsewhere are throttled or unreachable inside mainland China, and a page that calls them tends to hang rather than fail cleanly. A good number of the people we write for will open this site from China. It seemed worth getting right.

What the server records

Cookies are not the only way a website can record a visit. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs containing the IP address of the visiting device, the pages requested and the time. This is generated by the web server rather than by anything placed on your device, and it is used to keep the site running and secure. It is covered in our privacy notice.

When you leave this site

Links from this site take you to places with their own rules, and those rules apply once you arrive.

  • Substack, where The China Explainer is published and where the subscribe button sends you, sets its own cookies and operates its own privacy and cookie policies.
  • The newsletter archive is built to the same standard as this site and sets no cookies.
  • Source links in our writing point to government departments, statistical agencies and other publishers. Each has its own policy.

If this changes

If we ever add something that sets a cookie, a contact form, an analytics tool or an embedded service, we will ask for your consent first where the law requires it, and this page will be rewritten to describe exactly what is set, what it does and how long it lasts. Until then, the page says what it says because it is true.
