Although China is the UK's sixth-largest goods export market and its fourth-largest trading partner, four in five UK businesses do not report a high level of knowledge about how to export, and only a quarter know where to find support.
The China-Britain Business Council told Parliament's International Trade Committee that, alongside market access and regulation, “the difference in language and culture is also a major challenge” for UK firms exporting to or operating in China. It is also, the Council noted, the one most often overlooked.

What readers are entitled to expect.
Primary sources, linked
Every figure traces to the document it came from and carries an inline link to it. Nothing is taken on the authority of a press release, a summary, or another publication's account of it.
Judgement declared
Analysis is labelled as analysis and inference as inference, in the sentence where it appears. Observation drawn from experience is not presented as research.
Conflicting figures shown
Where two credible sources disagree, both figures are given along with the reason they differ.
Corrections, openly
Errors are corrected openly and dated. Nothing is quietly edited out of the archive.
No political commentary
Commercial, regulatory and cultural analysis only. This is a deliberate editorial position.
AI assistance, disclosed
AI tools are used for source scanning and first-line drafting. Verification against primary sources, editorial judgement and structure are human, and the final wording is written or approved by the editor.
This page loads nothing from anywhere else.
No third-party fonts, analytics, embedded video, content delivery network or tracking pixel. Several of those services are throttled or blocked in mainland China, and a page that calls them tends to hang rather than fail cleanly. Most site owners never find out. A fair number of the people this is written for will open it from China, so I would rather know.
